Undercover Agent Intercepts Kilo Of Meth Leading to Guilty Plea For Distribution and Possession

A 36-year-old resident of Los Angeles recently pleaded guilty in federal court in Boston for distributing and possessing with intent to distribute over one kilogram of methamphetamine. Hagen Dunphy, also known as “Molly Ruin” and “~Haley,” sent packages containing methamphetamine to an undercover federal agent in Massachusetts. The packages were intercepted in March and October of 2020, revealing substantial quantities of high-purity 98% pure d-methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as “ice,” and additional quantities of 75% and 97% pure methamphetamine.

Dunphy pleaded guilty to two counts of distribution of and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Each count provides for a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a minimum of three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million. The penalties highlight the gravity of methamphetamine charges, especially when they are charged at a federal level.

Federal sentencing guidelines provide for up to 10 years for a first offense involving 50 grams or more of pure methamphetamine, or 500 grams or more mixture. For a second or third offense, the sentencing can be 20 years to life, with a fine of up to $8 million.

It’s common for defendants accused of sending drugs through the mail to face federal charges as part of alleged Dark Web drug trafficking and mail order drug operations, which have become more common in recent years.

Methamphetamine Crackdown

Federal and state law enforcement agencies are actively working to curb the spread of methamphetamine, and individuals involved in its distribution face harsh penalties. As part of a broader Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, this case underscores the commitment of authorities to dismantling criminal organizations that pose a threat to the well-being of communities across the United States. The challenges of substance abuse and the threats to communities has been a source of public outcry and a frequent topic in the news.

Federal prosecutors have a mandate to impose harsh sentencing on anyone accused of possession and distribution of dangerous drugs.
