Massachusetts deals with this crime extremely severely. If the charge results in a conviction, you can go to state prison for 5-10 years, pay a fine and have your license suspended.

RMV Fraud in Massachusetts

RMV fraud in Massachusetts can take many forms. In recent news, a former manager of the RMV service center in Boston and a driving instructor were charged with extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion and honest services mail fraud for allegedly taking money to pass people on their multiple-choice learner’s test and paying a road test examiner at the Brockton RMV Service Center to misrepresent that driver’s license applicants had passed their road test.

These charges could result in up to 20 years in prison. In addition to license fraud, RMV fraud can involve many such serious crimes like identity theft, mail fraud and wire fraud, some of which may be federal crimes and all of which carry hefty prison sentences and fines.

If the RMV believes you have committed license fraud they can check their database using facial recognition technology to match faces they have on record with license holders. The RMV Registry Special Investigators work with the Massachusetts State police to identify and charge suspected fraudulent license holders. The Massachusetts State police may file criminal charges and the Registry may suspend your driver’s license.
