Plymouth Man Sentenced to Nine Years for Cyberstalking Campaign

A case of long-term cyberstalking has come to a close in Massachusetts, where James Florence Jr. of Plymouth was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for terrorizing more than a dozen women over a 16-year period. Florence, who had worked in information technology and held a security clearance, used his technical expertise to create over 60 fake accounts across nearly 30 online platforms to impersonate, harass, and exploit women he knew—some of whom were minors when the abuse began. His elaborate schemes included hacking personal accounts, generating fake pornographic images, and encouraging online mobs to further torment the victims.

Florence used stolen images, AI-generated pornography, and doctored content to portray victims in sexually explicit scenarios, often publishing their names, addresses, and professional affiliations. He went so far as to create AI chatbots using victims’ likenesses, programmed to engage strangers in explicit conversations and share the victims’ contact information. In some cases, he urged viewers to “make the whore famous”—a phrase he posted alongside photos and personal details in a call for public humiliation.

Florence pleaded guilty to seven counts of cyberstalking and one count of possession of child pornography. In addition to the nine-year prison sentence, he was also sentenced to 10 years of supervised release. Under federal law, cyberstalking is a serious offense, carrying potential prison terms of up to five years per count. Possession of child pornography can lead to even longer sentences, especially when coupled with evidence of exploitation, hacking, and organized online harassment.

This case underscores the evolving and complex nature of digital abuse. Federal agencies like the FBI are increasingly focused on holding perpetrators accountable, especially as artificial intelligence and anonymous platforms are weaponized.
