Machine Gun Conversion on the Rise – Chelsea, Massachusetts Man Pleads Guilty to Trafficking Machine Gun Conversion Devices

This week, Michael Williams of Chelsea pleaded guilty to selling multiple machine gun conversion devices to an undercover federal agent.

He faced an indictment for possessing a machine gun and being a felon in possession of ammunition. He was accused of agreeing to sell machine gun conversion devices and other firearm accessories to an undercover agent. Over a series of days Williams sold conversion devices to an agent, unknowingly. As a felon he was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition because of a prior felony conviction.

What is a machine gun conversion device?

It is an extremely dangerous device that can turn or convert semi automatic pistols and rifles into a fully automatic weapon in less than a minute. For example just one click of the trigger and can release all of the ammunition. These machine gun conversion devices, sometimes known as “switches,” “chips” or “auto sears” are a focus of US Attorneys across the country as well as the ATF.

The penalties for possessing these devices are significant. Possession of these devices can lead to federal prosecution and incarceration and carry sentences up to 10 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

Over the past five years, it is estimated that the ATF has recovered more than 31,000 machine gun conversion devices across the United States. Federal Agents and Federal Prosecutors are looking to prosecute these cases as a trend such as recently seen with Ghost Guns in Massachusetts
