Former One Direction singer Liam Payne tragically passed away after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was just 31 years old. According to initial reports, Payne had multiple drugs in his system at the time of his death, including a synthetic substance commonly known as “pink cocaine.” The preliminary toxicology results, cited by sources like ABC News, suggested the presence of MDMA, ketamine, methamphetamine, and benzodiazepines, though further tests are still pending.
Despite its name, “pink cocaine” contains little to no actual cocaine. This illicit drug is often a mix of substances like MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy), ketamine, and methamphetamine, giving it unpredictable and dangerous effects. The drug’s pink hue is usually due to added food coloring. Experts, such as Bridget Brennan, New York City’s special narcotics prosecutor, have noted that drugs like pink cocaine are often highly adulterated, making them especially risky for users.
Payne’s death followed a distressing incident at the Casa Sur Hotel, where hotel staff called emergency services after observing his erratic behavior. Described as being under the influence of alcohol and drugs, Payne was reportedly damaging his hotel room before he tragically fell from his third-floor balcony. The receptionist on duty expressed fears for Payne’s well-being, concerned he might harm himself, as revealed in the emergency call audio obtained by local media.
Emergency responders from Argentina’s medical services arrived on the scene shortly after the fall but found Payne unresponsive. An autopsy confirmed that he suffered fatal injuries, including severe trauma and internal hemorrhaging, consistent with a fall from such a height. Authorities are continuing their investigation, but the final toxicology results have yet to be released.
