Firearms deaths are now the leading cause of death

Firearms deaths are now the leading cause of death for children in the United States according to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This may be due to the rise of firearms purchases in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but studies are inconclusive. Firearms deaths for children ages 1-19 went up a dramatic thirty percent between 2019 and 2020; about 30 percent were suicides and 60 percent were homicides. The leading 2nd cause of death is automobile accidents and the 3rd is drug overdoses. Automobile related deaths had been the number one cause of death for children and teens for the last 60 years. Black and Latinx children are disproportionately affected by gun violence. Motor vehicle deaths have plummeted thanks to improved technologies for safety.

Ghost guns are becoming a more common way to produce guns cheaply and without much effort, which gives children more access to guns. They can be simply purchased online and assembled with the help of a YouTube tutorial.

Massachusetts is strict when it comes to gun laws and the punishments that can come if you do not comply. There are many laws that can impact gun owners ranging from improper storage of a firearm to illegal possession of a firearm to carrying a firearm. Being negligent in the storage of a firearm can result in the accidental death of a child due to a gun misfiring.

Having an illegal firearm is a felony in Massachusetts. There is a mandatory 18 months sentence if you are charged with a misdemeanor. However, if the firearm was loaded, that is another 2.5 years. If you have committed a different crime while having an illegal firearm like a ghost gun in your position, then the stakes are even higher. It is possible that you may face additional charges if you are caught with a ghost gun in your possession.
