Boston Escort & Brothel Case Update – Hearings for Alleged Brothel Clients Will Remain Public, SJC Justice Rules

One of the issues in the recent Boston Escort & Brothel Case was whether or not the names of the alleged people accused of buying sex should be made public.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently ruled that the “show-cause” hearings for twenty-eight people accused of buying sex from a Greater Boston brothel network, will remain open to the public after a Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court justice ruled with Cambridge District Court’s clerk-magistrate.

Associate Justice Frank M. Gaziano concluded that Cambridge District Court Clerk-Magistrate Sharon Shelfer Casey did not abuse her discretion or run afoul of the law when she granted public access to the “show-cause” hearings for the alleged sex buyers. These hearings are typically held in private.

Justice Frank M. Gaziano also found Casey was justified when she denied media outlets access to criminal complaint applications before the show-cause hearings.

Gaziano wrote, “Opening the show cause hearings to the public, as she found, promotes transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the judiciary by demonstrating that each individual accused of these crimes, no matter their station in life, is treated equally,”

The show-cause hearing dates have not been set at this time.
