High Profile Solicitation Crackdown: Hire a Boston Prostitution Defense Attorney to Defend Your Rights
28 people could be facing state criminal charges after the Cambridge Police Department and a Homeland Security Investigations task force officer submitted applications to Cambridge District Court for criminal complaints for allegedly paying for sex at high end brothels. According to federal investigators, hundreds of men with high profile jobs, including elected officials, government contractors with security clearance, professors and military officers paid for sex at an alleged ring of brothels in Watertown, Cambridge, MA and Fairfax and Tysons, Virginia.
“Pick a profession; they’re probably represented in this case,” acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy said during a news conference. “They are the men who fueled this commercial sex ring.”
If Cambridge District Court issues criminal charges against the alleged sex buyers their identities will be revealed, which will be a major blow to their careers, social standing and family relationships. Certain crimes like solicitation of sexual services have a higher social stigma that can rebound on anyone accused of such crimes, even if the accused is not ultimately convicted.
3 alleged ringleaders of the operation have already been charged with violating the Mann Act. The alleged customers will likely be facing state charges of solicitation. Solicitation of sexual services is a misdemeanor in Massachusetts that is punished more severely than prostitution. Solicitation is punished by up to 2 and a half years in the house of corrections and fine of up to $5000.
Any crime involving prostitution has serious stigma attached to it. It’s usually more common for individuals to be arrested for prostitution than for paying for sex. The scale of the crackdown signifies a change in attitudes towards the “Johns” who pay for sex. Prosecutors have signaled that they intend to make the customers responsible for facilitating the sex trafficking of women and others.
