Two Men Indicted in Boston on Charges of Sex Trafficking, Transporting a Minor Across State Lines

A recent federal indictment unsealed in Boston is an example of serious and complex federal criminal sex crimes charges involving allegations of sex trafficking and exploitation of minors across state lines. The case involves two individuals, David Kaufman and Darren Zaldivar, who are now facing multiple serious charges stemming from an alleged conspiracy involving a minor victim.

Summary of the Charges

David Kaufman, 44, was arrested on April 16, 2025, following an initial indictment that charged him with persuading and coercing an individual to travel across state lines to engage in prohibited sexual conduct, along with aiding and abetting. A superseding indictment has since expanded the case:

  • Darren Zaldivar, 19, of Ludlow, Massachusetts, has been added as a co-defendant. He is charged with transporting a minor with the intent for the minor to engage in prohibited sexual activity.
  • Both Kaufman and Zaldivar are charged with conspiring to engage in sex trafficking of a minor.
  • Kaufman faces an additional charge of sex trafficking of a minor, bringing further legal complexity and increasing potential penalties.

According to federal court filings, Kaufman is alleged to have coerced multiple victims—primarily minor males and young adults aged 14 to 20—into commercial sexual acts, some of which he allegedly recorded. The allegations include providing victims with alcohol and controlled substances, paying for travel across state lines, and exchanging money or gifts for sexual conduct.

Potential Penalties

The criminal charges brought in this case are among the most serious in federal law. Each count carries substantial penalties:

  • Coercing interstate travel for prohibited sexual conduct: Up to 20 years in prison.
  • Transporting an individual for prohibited sexual activity: Up to 20 years in prison.
  • Sex trafficking of a minor: Up to life imprisonment, with a mandatory minimum of five years of supervised release if convicted.
  • Conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of a minor: Up to life imprisonment.

These federal charges also include substantial fines—each carrying up to $250,000—and mandatory terms of supervised release following any prison sentence.

Defending Federal Sex Crimes Allegations Requires Skilled Federal Sex Crimes Defense

When criminal allegations cross state lines or involve interstate conduct, the case often falls under federal jurisdiction, which means federal prosecutors and investigators take the lead. These agencies have vast resources and experience, which makes these cases complex to defend.

In situations involving federal sex crimes, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Long prison sentences, severe reputational damage, and mandatory minimums are on the table. This is why anyone facing similar charges—or under investigation for potential federal offenses—needs the support of a highly experienced federal sex crimes defense attorney.
