What is Fentanyl? Understanding the Seriousness of Fentanyl Drug Possession and Drug Trafficking Charges

What is Fentanyl? Why are Fentanyl Charges so Serious?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. It is a controlled substance that is considered one of the most dangerous street drugs available. Law enforcement agencies take the distribution and possession of this potent drug very seriously. Fentanyl charges carry severe consequences that demand immediate attention. If you have been accused of possessing or distributing fentanyl or possessing with intent to distribute, you should retain a Boston Fentanyl and Drug Crimes Defense attorney immediately.

How is Fentanyl Used

Fentanyl can be mixed with other dangerous and highly addictive  drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA. Fentanyl does not take much to produce a high, and this is risky because people taking drugs mixed with Fentanyl don’t realize they might contain it, which accounts for numerous overdoses.

Law Enforcement Fentanyl Crackdown

Recent drug trafficking arrests involving a Boston-based ring accused of flooding Massachusetts and New Hampshire with fentanyl and crack cocaine have highlighted the serious nature of federal fentanyl drug trafficking charges. Law enforcement officials seized about 1.6 kilograms of suspected cocaine, 150 grams of suspected cocaine base and 250 grams of suspected fentanyl. 22 suspects were arrested. The arrests resulted from a coordinated Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces operation involving the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Manchester Police Department with assistance from multiple other organizations. Law enforcement indicated their tough stance on Fentanyl charges, stating that the alleged drug trafficking operation, led by alleged ringleader Juan Ramon Soto Baez was “profiting from the suffering of others.”

Fentanyl Possession and Distribution Charges

If you are accused of possession of Fentanyl in Massachusetts, you could be facing up to 2 years in jail and a $2000 fine. Fentanyl is a class A drug in Massachusetts. Possession of over 10 grams of fentanyl can be charged as drug trafficking and can result in 3 and a half to 20 years in prison.

For individuals convicted of federal fentanyl drug trafficking offenses, sentences can range from 5 to 10 years for a first offense, depending on the quantity involved. Repeat offenses or larger quantities can lead to even lengthier sentences. It is crucial to recognize the significance of these mandatory minimums and the importance of robust legal representation to navigate the legal process effectively.

Drug trafficking and possession are often based on evidence that can seem arbitrary, such as being in the presence of a controlled substance or possessing a controlled substance of a certain quantity that is divided in a particular way.
