Dhar Law, LLP has recently obtained an order of pre-trial probation for a university student named as a co-defendant in a state criminal complaint. Our client, a foreign national holding Russian and Israeli dual citizenship, is an honors student at a major local university, pursuing a degree in business administration. The allegations involved two charges in connection with an assault, in which our client was the true victim. He reported to law enforcement that he attempted to peacefully resolve an altercation between other university students, but he himself was charged in the ensuing melee. The university’s disciplinary board subsequently found that he was not responsible for any of the charges under consideration as a result of the altercation.
After pre-trial negotiations, our defense team prevailed in convincing the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office to agree to place the student on pre-trial probation. Had our client plead guilty to any of the charges, it would have jeopardized his good standing at the university and his U.S. immigration status.
Vikas S. Dhar served as lead counsel and was assisted in pre-trial proceedings by intern Jason Keum.
